The fairest Cape is known for its picturesque scenery, Table Mountain (regarded as one of the seven natural wonders of the world), great beaches, Robben Island, magnificent wine farms and diverse culture and is widely regarded by many as one of the Top 10 cities to visit in the world.
During our various trips to the Cape, one of our preferred vacation spots is Belcharto Barns and Cottages, which is situated at Bottelary Hills in the Stellenbosch Winelands.
It all started when Conrad and Terry-Ann Jacobs, who were living in the Cape wanted a bigger place for all their animals. After quite an extensive search, the agent found them Belcharto. On the property were four run down cottages which they decided to renovate into self-catering accommodation and a hall which is now hired out for functions, conferences and team building events. This has become Terry-Ann’s pet project and is now a very popular getaway for families, sporting teams, wedding guests and business people alike.
So why choose Belcharto?
If you enjoy nature, this setting is right up your alley as the rooster is sure to let you know when it’s time to get up. Along with this there are several animals including horses, ponies, dogs, chickens, ducks, geese, guinea fowl and a pot belly pig named Robbie.
For the fitness fanatics, there are mountain bike trails and you can enjoy taking walks or runs through the winelands. There are also dams where one can picnic.
For the golfers, the Kuils River and Devonvale Golf courses are nearby and for the shoppers, the Soneike and Tygervalley shopping centres are 5 and 14 kms away. There are also several spa and massage facilities in the area.
The stay can be an adventure and an education for children too. Some of the families who choose Belcharto are not familiar with the farm style life so the children are exposed to nature and get a chance to help the staff with their daily duties, and all this in a safe environment whilst the parents are relaxing.
For the wine lovers, Fort Simon, Sterhuis and Goede Hoop are a stones throw away and to top that there are 36 wine farms within 15 kms of Belcharto. One of main attractions in the area, Stellenbosch is 22 kms away. Terry-Ann can arrange bus tours for those who prefer not to drive whilst enjoying their wine tasting outings.
The Jacobs family host two bring and braai events each year. In May, all are welcome to enjoy a therapeutic day of olive picking and on 24 September, it’s the annual Heritage Day braai.
As the cottages are self-catering, a very popular spot down the road is The Palms restaurant. You will often find busloads of people enjoying the food and entertainment that they offer. They also serve the best ribs in town! This is just one of several eating places nearby.
Belcharto’s popularity is further confirmed by the amount of visitors who may book a cottage for a month or so and end up staying indefinately. Some are now even renting the long term accommodation.
Four fully furnished self-catering cottages. Each cottage has two large bedrooms, a loft, a fully equipped kitchen, a patio, a mobile braai and a shaded parking
Mobile braai facilities at the hall as well
Functions, conference and team building events – the cottages, depending on availability, can also be hired out for this
