Wozniacki, Pliskova and Kvitova all through, Sharapova has to wait

There were no surprises for the Top 10 Ladies seeds on Day 2 of the French Open, as rain interrupted proceedings later in the afternoon in Paris.

The second seed, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark saw off a brave effort from Danielle Collins of the USA with a 7-6(2) 6-1 win.

Next up for Wozniacki will be a first time appearance against Georgina García Pérez of Spain, who defeated Dalila Jakupović of Slovenia 6-3 6-4.

The 6th seed, Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic took to Court 1 and was made to sweat it out against fellow countrywoman, Barbora Krejcikova. Pliskova, the “ace queen” only managed to blast one power serve past Krejcikova during her 7-6(6) 6-4 victory.

Her Czech draw continues as she will now play Lucie Safarova in the second round. Pliskova currently leads their H2H 6-2.

Petra Kvitova, the eighth seed from the Czech Republic and one of the most inspiring comeback stories on the WTA tour, didn’t have things all her way when the unseeded, Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay pushed her to three sets, before the 2012 semi-finalist managed to advance with a 3-6 6-1 7-5 victory, to set up a second round match against the Spanish player, Lara Arruabarrena. Arruabarrena defeated Timea Babos of Hungary 7-6(5) 6-3.

Kvitova and Arruabarrena have only played once before, on clay in 2016, with Kvitova winning that match.

Two-time French Open champion, Maria Sharapova’s match against Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands was delayed due to rain, with the Russian leading their H2H 1-0.
