The fourth seed, Grigor Dimitrov found himself having a change of tactic shortly before he was about to play his opening round match at the French Open today.
Dimitrov was scheduled to play Viktor Troicki, but the Serbian withdrew with lower back pain shortly before their match, so the Egyptian “lucky loser”, Mohamed Safwat was summoned to play in his first Grand Slam tournament.
Despite a nervous, but valiant effort from Safwat, the match went as expected with Dimitrov advancing to the second round with a 6-1 6-4 7-6(1) win.
In other action, David Goffin, Kei Nishikori, Sascha Zverev, Fernando Verdasco and Gael Monfils all advanced to the second round.
Aussie hopeful, Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the French Open today after failing to recover from an elbow injury which has been hampering his singles play over the past two months. He was scheduled to play fellow countryman, Bernard Tomic tomorrow.
