The No. 1 seed, Simona Halep of Romania and the unseeded American, Lauren Davis had the Rod Laver Arena crowd on their feet during their epic 3 hours and 44 minutes third round match earlier today.
In a week that has produced enough drama in the Top 10 ladies draw, with Garbine Muguruza (3), Venus Williams (5), Jelena Ostapenko (7), Johanna Konta (7) and Coco Vandeweghe (10) all been given their marching orders, Davis almost added Halep’s name to the list.
Davis dominated the winners, hitting 52-27, but it was Halep, who served 4 aces, saved three match points and had to serve four times for the victory, who eventually advanced to the fourth round. The final score was 4-6 6-4 15-13.
There is no relief in sight for Halep as her next opponent is Japan’s Naomi Osaka.
Former 18-time Grand Slam champion and now commentator, Chris Evert, tipped Osaka to be the player to watch in 2018.
Osaka, who already saw off two of the seeded players, Elena Vesnina (16) and Ashleigh Barty (18), will have the fresher legs going into Monday’s match and is certain to give Halep a good run for her money.
