The No. 1 seed, Rafael Nadal of Spain, who reverted back to his trademark sleeveless shirts for this year’s Australian Open, opened his campaign with a 6-1 6-1 6-1 victory over Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic on the Rod Laver Arena today.
The 94 minute match, which produced crowd-pleasing tennis, clinical service games and 28 winners off the Nadal racquet, without any signs of knee trouble, is just the start that last year’s runner-up wanted.
He will now face Leonardo Mayer of Argentina in the second round.
Marin Cilic (6) needed four sets to see off Vasek Pospisil of Canada and the 3rd seed, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria easily sailed past Dennis Novak of Austria in three sets.
