Naomi Osaka ousts Angelique Kerber at the US Open

The defending champion and 6th seed, Angelique Kerber of Germany’s woeful 2017 just got worse as she lost to the unseeded Naomi Osaka of Japan, 6-3 6-1 during their first round match on the Arthur Ashe Stadium a few minutes ago.

The match which only lasted 64 minutes, saw the 19 year old Osaka hitting 22 winners versus the 9 from the German, who also served 5 double faults. This was the first meeting for the two players.

Kerber must certainly now be wanting these past 12 months to end. She started it off on a high, replacing Serena Williams as the No. 1 player, followed by winning the 2016 US Open final. Since then, she has only played in two WTA finals, losing both, been injured, lost form and seen her ranking slip down to No. 6.

As the rain continues to hamper the day’s play, Rafael Nadal and Dusan Lajovic are busy warming up on Ashe.
