Zverev, Williams and Cibulkova through as David Ferrer is ousted on Day 1

In the Men’s draw, Alexander Zverev, the 4th seed from Germany, saw off a brave fight from the unseeded Darian King of Barbados, 7-6(9) 7-5 6-4 to complete the Day 1 proceedings on the Arthur Ashe Stadium early this morning.

The 8th seed, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga was not troubled by the unseeded Marius Copil, defeating the Romanian 6-3 6-3 6-4.

Not so lucky was the 21st seed and two-time semi-finalist in New York, Spain’s David Ferrer, who went down to the unseeded Kazakhstan player, Mikhail Kukushkin, 6-4 3-6 2-6 1-6 on Court 7.

In the Ladies draw, both the 9th seed, Venus Williams and the 11th seed, Dominika Cibulkova were made to sweat it out in three sets. Williams defeated Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovakia 6-3 3-6 6-2 and Cibulkova defeated fellow Slovakian, Jana Cepelova, 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2.

Caroline Wozniacki, the 5th seed from Denmark, sailed past the unseeded Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania, 6-1 7-5.
