Expect some singing (Twain) and screeching (Sharapova) at the US Open tonight

You can expect things to get very loud on the Arthur Ashe Court this evening when firstly the birthday girl and singer, Shania Twain takes the microphone at the US Open Opening Ceremony and then, the second seed and 2015 semi-finalist, Simona Halep of Romania takes on the unseeded wildcard and 2006 US Open champion, Maria Sharapova of Russia, who certainly does not need a microphone to be heard.

Halep and Sharapova have battled it out on six previous occasions with Sharapova winning each time.

Halep will start as the favourite, but she seems to be battling against the “bigger” players and if Sharapova gets a sniff of nerves from the diminutive Romanian, she is likely to up it a gear or two, and I’m not just referring to the tennis!

A concern for the Sharapova camp will be her fitness, as she has been battling with injuries since returning to the tour in April.

After the ladies have battled it out, it will be time for the 4th seeded German sensation, Alexander Zverev, who celebrates his birthday the day after Sharapova, to take on the unseeded Darian King of Barbados.
