Muguruza and Kvitova advance to the second round

Garbine Muguruza of Spain continued her dominant form by sweeping aside Varvara Lepchenko of the USA, 6-0 6-3 on the Arthur Ashe Court at the US Open today.

Muguruza, who is seeded third at the tournament is one of the favourites, if not the current favourite to lift the winner’s trophy in a fortnight.

Two-time Grand Slam champion and the 13th seed, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic had to fend off a rather formidable opponent in the form of the 2008 US Open finalist, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, to advance as the 7-5 7-5 winner on the Louis Armstrong Court.

The first seeded casualty in the Ladies draw was the 32nd seed American player, Lauren Davis, who succumbed to her countrywoman, the unseeded Sofia Kenin 5-7 5-7.
