Magdalena Rybarikova, the unseeded Slovakian player, did to the 24th seeded American, Coco Vandeweghe today what Vandeweghe did to everyone at the Australian Open this year – she swept aside the seeded players.
In a rain interrupted match that lasted 1 hr and 14 minutes, Rybarikova ran circles around a frustrated Vandeweghe. Even though the Slovakian only hit eight winners, it was Vandeweghe who spoilt her seventeen winners with thirty unforced errors and seven double faults. The final score was 6-3 6-3.
This is the furthest that the 28 year old Rybarikova has advanced in any of the Grand Slam tournaments since turning pro in 2005.
The victory means that Rybarikova will now face the 2015 finalist and 14th seed, Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the semi-finals.
Muguruza earlier disposed of the 7th seed, Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, 6-3 6-4.
