Halep sees off Azarenka – now eyeing the title and World No. 1 spot

The second seed, Simona Halep of Romania, defeated Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, 7-6(3) 6-2 today, to advance to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

With the current World No. 1, Angelique Kerber having lost to Garbine Muguruza today, Halep will take over the No. 1 spot, if she manages to reach the semi-finals at SW19. Should she lose in the quarter-finals, then Karolina Pliskova will take over the No. 1 spot.

Standing between her and the top spot is the British favourite and sixth seed, Johanna Konta, who was pushed all the way by Caroline Garcia of France. Konta managed to hold on for a 7-6(3) 4-6 6-4 win.
