Muguruza stops Kerber in her tracks

The 14th seed and 2015 finalist, Garbine Muguruza from Spain came back from a set down to upset the top seed and 2016 finalist, Angelique Kerber of Germany, 4-6 6-4 6-4 on Court 2 today, to advance to the quarter-finals of this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

With this loss, Kerber will relinquish her No. 1 spot on the rankings.

Muguruza will now face Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova, who is yet to advance past the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

Kuznetsova, the 7th seed, dismissed the 9th seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-2 6-4 on Court 3 today.

The unseeded, Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia was pushed to three sets before she could overcome another unseeded player, Petra Martic of Croatia 6-4 2-6 6-3.

Rybarikova will now meet the American, Coco Vandeweghe, who upset the 5th seed, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, 7-6(4) 6-4.

Rybarikova and Vandeweghe have battled it out twice before – on grass and clay, with Rybarikova coming up trumps on both occasions.
