Could it be Halep versus Konta in the quarter-finals?

Things are certainly heating up in the Ladies draw at the close of week one at this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

The local favourite and sixth seed, Johanna Konta, breezed past Maria Sakkari of Greece today. The score was 6-4 6-1.

Her fourth round opponent will be Caroline Garcia of France, who defeated Madison Brengle of the USA, 6-4 6-3.

In the same section of the draw, the second seed, Simona Halep of Romania saw off Peng Shuai of China, 6-4 7-6(7) to set up a fourth round clash against the two-time semi-finalist, Victoria Azarenka, who came back from a set down to defeat another British hopeful, Heather Watson, 3-6 6-1 6-4.

Halep and Konta appear to be on a quarter-final collision course, but they’ve got two tough matches to get through first on Monday.
