World No. 1, Angelique Kerber of Germany, advanced to the third round of this year’s Wimbledon Championships after she defeated Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 7-5 7-5 on Court 1 today.
Kerber will now meet Shelby Rogers of the USA. Rogers upset Lucie Safarova 6-7(4) 6-4 6-3 on Court 9.
The 3rd seed and favourite to take the title, Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of the unseeded player, Magdaléna Rybarikova of Slovakia. Pliskova had no answers for Rybarikova’s tenacity and the pressure showed, as at times, her shot selection was poor and she played directly into her opponent’s hands. Pliskova will have to work on her stamina, as she’s often left wanting when being pushed to three sets. Rybarikova won the match 3-6 7-5 6-2.
Her third round opponent will be Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine, who defeated Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland, 6-1 2-6 6-3.
The 2015 finalist and 14th seed, Garbine Muguruza of Spain sailed past Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, 6-2 6-4, to book a third round clash against Sorana Cirstea of Romania, who advanced when Bethanie Mattek-Sands was forced to retire with an agonising acute knee injury during the third set of their match.
In other Day 4 action, Caroline Wozniacki, Timea Bacsinszky, Agnieszka Radwanska and Svetlana Kuznetsova all advanced to the third round.
