At age 37, the tenth seed, Venus Williams recorded her 97th Wimbledon match win today, when she fought back to defeat Wang Qiang of China, 4-6 6-4 6-1 on Court No. 1.
As we have become accustomed to over the years, Williams often serves up a mixture of shots in her matches, and today was no different. She served 6 aces, 7 double faults, 43 winners and committed 33 unforced errors, and all this in 1 hour and 48 minutes. Her continued dominance at the net has to be admired as she won 16 out of the 19 points.
Williams next opponent will be Naomi Osaka from Japan, who defeated Barbora Strycova from the Czech Republic, 6-1 0-6 6-4.
The second seed, Simona Halep from Romania, was made to sweat for 1 hour and 30 minutes against the Brazilian player, Beatriz Haddad Maia, before she advanced victorious with a 7-5 6-3 win.
Despite facing the inevitable, Haddad Maia still managed to thank a fan during the second set, who was cheering her on.
Next up for Halep will be Peng Shuai of China, who ended Carla Suarez Navarro’s title hopes with a 6-2 6-2 win.
