Venus Williams gets off to a good start at her 20th Wimbledon

Five-time Wimbledon champion, Venus Williams, got her 20th Wimbledon campaign off to a good start, when she defeated Elise Mertens of Belgium 7-6(7) 6-4 in a rain interrupted match on Court 1 today.

Williams was dominant with her first serve and net play and despite a good fight back by the 21 year old Belgium player, including saving two match points, Williams booked her place in the second round.

The 37 year old Williams, who has unfortunately been in the spotlight the past few days for a tragic motor vehicle accident, was initially unable to escape a barrage of questions in her post match interview, which saw her break down and leave the room. The media were advised to keep the questions tennis related and she returned a few minutes later, clearly distressed, to answer questions about the match.
