Ostapenko wins the Birthday girl battle, and into the Final

Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia celebrated her 20th birthday in style when she defeated fellow birthday girl, Timea Bacsinszky 7-6(4) 3-6 6-3 on Court Philippe Chatrier today, to reach her first French Open final.

The crowd was treated to 2 hours and 24 minutes of scintillating tennis as the two energised players exchanged rallies. Bacsinszky, who required strapping on her right thigh after sliding awkwardly in the fourth game of the first set, was not able to rely on her experience as her young opponent attacked every point with aggression.

Despite hitting forty-five unforced errors, the fifty winners will give her a confidence boost going into the final.
