The 19 year old Latvian player, Jelena Ostapenko reached her first Grand Slam semi-final, after defeating the 11th seed, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, 4-6 6-2 6-2 in less than favourable conditions on Court Suzanne Lenglen today.
This is the Latvian’s second big upset, after she defeated the 2010 finalist, Samantha Stosur of Australia in the fourth round on Sunday.
Wozniacki took an early lead in the first set as the blustery weather conditions seemed to affect Ostapenko, who kept on misfiring her shots. Ostapenko served 3 double faults and produced 25 unforced errors, giving Wozniacki the first set.
The conditions continued to worsen, resulting in a locker room break for the players. Ostapenko seemed to benefit from the break more, as she took control of the next two sets, blasting shot after shot past Wozniacki.
Ostapenko becomes the first Latvian tennis player to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament.
