Wozniacki outplays Kuznetsova to secure the first quarter-finals spot

Caroline Wozniacki, the 11th seed from Denmark, became the first player to qualify for this year’s French Open quarter-finals, when she defeated the 8th seed, Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, 6-1 4-6 6-2 on Court Philippe Chatrier today.

Going into the match, the two had battled it out on 13 previous occasions, but never on clay. Wozniacki had come up trumps during 7 of their previous matches.

Both players have had mixed results in their run up to the French Open this year. Wozniacki has lost in three finals and Kuznetsova in one.

Wozniacki, who previously held the No. 1 position for 67 weeks without winning a Grand Slam title, will now be hoping to improve on her last quarter-final appearance at the French Open in 2010, when she lost to the eventual winner, Francesca Schiavone in two sets.

Wozniacki now awaits the outcome of the Samantha Stosur / Jelena Ostapenko match, which is currently being played on Court 2, with Stosur having taken the first set.
