What a clay court season Rafael Nadal is having!
Not only did his serve his way to his 5th Mutua Madrid Open title yesterday, after defeating a galiant Dominic Thiem, 7-6(8) 6-4, he also equalled Novak Djokovic’s record of 30 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles.
Nadal had to fend off everything that the Austrian threw at him during yesterday’s 2 hour and 17 minute, scintillating display of tennis.
Thiem can certainly hold his head high, after improving on his last result against the Spaniard, a fortnight ago at the Barcelona Open final.
At the age of 31, Nadal may be a bit tired, but is clearly not done as he continues his dominance on the clay court surfaces. This is his third consecutive title on clay this season, with only the Italian Open and the second Grand Slam of the year, the French Open remaining.
