Halep and Mladenovic march on in Madrid

With the departure of the top two seeds, Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova at the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain, the 3rd seed and defending champion, Simona Halep of Romania, continued to lead the charge during the quarter-final action, when she easily swept past the Australian Open “seed slayer”, Coco Vandeweghe of America, 6-1 6-1 on Court Manolo Santana today.

Kristina Mladenovic of France defeated another Romanian, Sorana Cirstea 6-4 6-4, whilst Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia defeated Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, 6-3 6-3.

The 8th seed, Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia will battle it out against Eugenie Bouchard of Canada this evening.
