Halep, Mladenovic and Kuznetsova all victorious in Madrid

The defending champion and third seed, Simona Halep of Romania kept her title hopes alive, after getting the better of Australia’s Samantha Stosur for the second year running, at the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain today.

Stosur, who mixed up her game with enough unforced errors to damage her winners, just couldn’t get the upperhand against the Romanian, who closed off the match with a 6-4 4-6 6-4 win.

Halep will now play Coco Vandeweghe from America, who battled it out during her 5-7 6-4 7-5 win against local favourite, Carla Suarez Navarro.

Kiki Mladenovic of France set up a quarter-final match against Sorana Cristea of Romania, after breezing past countrywoman, Oceane Dodin, 6-2 6-1. Cristea fought off Japan’s Misaki Doi, 7-5 3-6 6-1.

The 2015 finalist and eighth seed, Svetlana Kuzentsova had an easier match today, when she defeated Wang Qiang of China 6-4 7-5. Kuznetsova will now await the outcome of the Angelique Kerber / Eugenie Bouchard match to see who her next opponent will be.
