In the Round of 64 action at the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain today, top seed, Angelique Kerber of Germany, sailed past Timea Babos of Hungary, 6-4 6-2.
The current World No. 2, who is hungry to regain the top spot in Ladies tennis, will either face Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic or Pauline Parmentier of France in the next round.
The No. 8 seed, Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, was also not troubled during her match against Yaroslava Shvedova, coming up trumps with a 6-4 6-3 win. Her next opponent will be the American, Alison Riske, who sailed past the Swiss player, Viktorija Golubic, 6-2 6-4.
The wild card entrant and former Mutua Madrid Open winner, Maria Sharapova of Russia, was made to fight for her 4-6 6-4 6-0 victory against the 17th seed, Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia. Lucic-Baroni, who won the first set and lost the second set, just ran out of steam, allowing Sharapova to close off the match without even winning a game in the third set.
Sharapova will now face her one time “fan”, Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, who battled past Alize Cornet of France, with a 6-4 4-6 6-1 win.
Bouchard has voiced her dissatisfaction towards the WTA for allowing Sharapova back on the tour following her reduced 15 month ban from the sport.
A word to the wise for Genie. Rather concentrate on your own form and leave your talking for the court as judging by Maria’s form, she may well leave you with “egg on your face” tomorrow.
