The 25 year old, unseeded American player, Coco Vandeweghe is certainly making a name for herself as she sweeps past the seeded players, one by one.
Her latest casualty yesterday was the 7th seeded, Garbine Muguruza who had no answer to the American’s power play, which included 31 winners and a 100% success rate at the net. Vandeweghe needed 1 hour and 23 minutes to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final with a 6-4 6-0 win.
Her semi-final opponent will be none other than Venus Williams, a fellow American whose play Vandeweghe has no doubt admired and emulated over the years.
At the “tender” age of 36, Williams, a 7-time Grand Slam champion’s best performance at the Australian Open was as Finalist in 2003.
Williams had a tougher quarter-final match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who made her work for the 6-4 7-6(3) victory.
Based on their form so far, Vandeweghe, who virtually matches Williams in both height and weight, will certainly walk out on to the Rod Laver Arena as the favourite, but Williams, who is one of the most composed and experienced players on tour, is still a force to be reckoned with.
