The 2017 Australian Open suffered its biggest shock when the unseeded Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan ousted the second seed, Novak Djokovic in a thrilling five-setter, on the Rod Laver Arena just now.
The 30 year old Istomin, who turned professional in 2008 and has to date only won 1 Singles and 3 Doubles titles, needed 4 hours and 48 minutes to seal the match.
Istomin took the tight first set tie-break with Djokovic taking the next two sets. Istomin then needed another tie-break to clinch the fourth set before having to serve out the match in the fifth. The final score was 7-6(8) 5-7 2-6 7-6(5) 6-4.
In his on-court post-match interview with Jim Courier, Istomin joked that he felt sorry for Novak as he (Istomin) was playing so well today. He went on to say that he was just as surprised with the result.
Istomin’s 3rd round opponent will be Pablo Carrena Busta, who defeated Kyle Edmund 6-2 6-4 6-2.
