Did Pat Cash jinx the 4th seeded, Simona Halep from Romania?
The former two-time Australian Open finalist and Wimbledon champion had Halep on his list of four possible first round upsets, so if you’re a betting person, then the unseeded Shelby Rogers from America has made you smile.
Let’s start at the end. The score line was 6-3 6-1, but don’t think it was all plain sailing for the American, who after being grilled by Halep, especially on her own serve, needed three break point opportunities in the sixth game of the first set to make the breakthrough. Halep then managed to hold her next service game but Rogers, who already had the edge, closed off the set.
Halep, who has been battling with tendinitis in the knee since the WTA Finals in Singapore, called for the trainer in the second set, but it wasn’t meant to be as Rogers just powered her way into the second round and a meeting with homegirl, Ashleigh Barty, who defeated Germany’s Annika Beck 6-4 7-5.
As for Halep, it’s a second consecutive first round disaster at the Australian Open.
In other first round action, the American veteran and former multiple Grand Slam winner, Venus Williams managed to hold off the Ukrainian, Kateryna Kozlova 7-6(5) 7-5.
There were also wins for the 7th seed, Garbine Muguruza, Coco Vandeweghe, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Eugenie Bouchard.
