The French team of Richard Gasquet and Kristina Mladenovic rounded off a fun-filled, action packed week of Hopman Cup proceedings at the Perth Arena in Australia yesterday, after defeating Jack Sock and Coco Vandeweghe of America.
Gasquet and Sock got the final day’s action underway, with the Frenchman taking the first set and looking good in the second set. Sock fought his way back to force a third set but was unable to capitalise on a match point. Gasquet then turned the tables to take the match 6-3 5-7 7-6(6).
In the second match, Vandeweghe tied the rubber for America by beating Mladenovic 6-4 7-5.
The title went down to the wire, with the French team going on to defeat the Americans in the FAST4 mixed doubles match, 4-1 4-3.
It was the second Hopman Cup title for France.
Federer steals the show
It’s no secret that the Australians and tennis fans across the world love Roger Federer, so knowing that he was fit enough to represent Switzerland, broke the ticket sales record each time he stepped out onto the court.
Despite not being able to reach the finals with partner, Belinda Bencic, Federer provided the most entertainment on and off the court for the tennis fans and the public alike.
The 17-time Grand Slam Champion and former World No. 1 player, who missed the last six months of the tour due to a knee injury, is now ready for the Australian Open.
