In Ladies action on Day 7, current World No. 2 and the Rio Olympic Games Silver medalist winner, Germany’s Angelique Kerber took on the former World No. 2 and the Rio Olympic Games Bronze medalist winner, Petra Kvitova from Czechoslovakia.
There was not much separating the two players, except for their current rankings. Kerber is ranked No. 2 and Kvitova No. 14 for this year’s US Open Tennis Championships. Other than that, they had played each other 8 times, sharing the spoils at 4-4. Kvitova has won the Wimbledon Ladies title twice whereas Kerber won the Australian Open title earlier this year.
But all that was forgotten yesterday and Kerber, who is vying for the World No. 1 Ladies ranking, dominated the match with a 6-3 7-5 win in 1 hour and 28 minutes to secure a quarter-final spot against Roberta Vinci of Italy, who earlier defeated Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine 7-6(7) 6-2.
